MAHOGANY  Against the Grain uses only the highest quality mahogany, sourced from sustainable and renewable forests. It is important to note that the colour of raw mahogany can vary according to a number of factors including age, storage and source. The colour of the original wood influences the shade of the polish achieved during the finishing process so a sample may differ slightly from the final product.  To prevent staining we recommend a clear varnish, stain (polish) or paint finish is applied. A clear lacquer will draw out mahogany’s natural toffee colour.  Please refer to this page to see how a clear lacquer alters the final colour.

DIMENSIONS  As the majority of our furniture is hand-carved the dimensions are approximate and could vary slightly from the sizes listed. If this is a concern please contact us for exact measurements of the piece you are interested in purchasing.

POLISH/ STAIN FINISHES  We have a number of polish/ stain finishes available to choose from. As noted under the Mahogany title above the depth of the colour achieved is influenced by the initial colour of the wood. All our furniture is finished with a satin finish as standard however a matt or gloss finish is possible instead on request. Please refer to this page for more information about our polish/ stain options.

PAINT FINISHES  We have a number of paint finishes available to select from however we can confidently match any paint colour, including RAL and those of major paint suppliers such as Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and Dulux. In order to colour match we either need a sample of full name and code details. All our furniture is finished with a satin finish as standard however a matt or gloss finish is possible instead on request. Please refer to this page for more information about our paint options.

FINISH EFFECTS  There are a number of effects we can apply to painted furniture.  These include rubbing back paint to reveal the wood, a finish similar to our distressed finish, both of which achieve a shabby style and can be applied to any paint colour. Additionally a patina can be added to painted furniture which is often used to create an aged look and helps to emphasise intricate carving. Finally highlighting can be applied to painted and polished furniture, highlights are applied by hand and are available in silver, gold and a number of other metallic colours.

FABRICS  Against the Grain has a small collection of fabrics, carefully selected to co-ordinate well with the furniture collection. Most customers choose to supply their own fabric and the length required is listed by item. Whether selecting from our range or choosing your own fabric it is important to consider the item’s end use.  All our furniture is upholstered to meet with domestic use specifications. If the furniture is going to be used in a commercial environment please supply Against the Grain with any specific requirements.  Fabrics should be sent to Against the Grain Interiors Limited, 23 Rectory Lane, Lymm, Cheshire WA13 0AJ.

FABRIC TRIMS  All upholstered pieces are finished with a co-ordinated stud trim as standard; this works well with the majority of our furniture. We can upholster with a braid or double pipe trim instead. You are welcome to supply your own braid and can provide you with the length required. Additional fabric will be required for a double pipe trim using the same upholstery fabric however the suitability for this finish is dependent on the selected fabric.

FURNITURE CARE  For polished/ stained furniture waxing with a good quality polish based on beeswax (not spray polishes) brings out the colour and grain of the wood and provides protection. Put a small amount of polish on a soft cloth and rub the piece until the wax on the cloth shines. This will burnish the surface and evaporate any solvent. Then polish with a clean duster. If possible apply the wax at night to allow it to nourish the wood and polish the following day. Normally wax polish need not be used more than once every few months as too much wax will cause dullness and absorb dust however frequent dusting is encouraged using a clean, dry, soft duster.

If cleaning polished furniture is necessary use a soft damp cloth or a clean chamois leather well wrung out. A weak solution of vinegar diluted in water can be used to clean more thoroughly but only on polished, undamaged wood. After cleaning, wipe again with a clean cloth rinsed in clear water and dry immediately with absorbent paper or a soft dry cloth.

For painted furniture dust or wipe clean with a cloth dampened with water once a week. Be sure not to leave water spots on the surface as they could leave permanent marks. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on painted finishes as they can be quite damaging.  If cleaning is necessary dampen a soft cloth with a mixture of hot water and liquid dishwashing detergent. Wring the cloth as much as possible to remove excess liquid. Rub the surface lightly in a circular motion. Dry the surface immediately with a clean, soft towel.

Where possible keep painted and polished furniture away from humid environments and central heating to prevent loss of moisture and avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading or darkening of wood.
